I remember getting taught about the Revolutionary War in school, from elementary through college, and it was always the same pre-determined victory of the Rebels over the Royalists. But with Norm Desmarais' book the adventure and immediacy of battle is brought back to life. Norm Desmarais' experience as a re-enactor gives us a soldier's eye view of the battles and landscapes of the war. I highly recommend this vivid account.

The next volume of the Guide to the American Revolutionary War will cover New York. As the events in western New York and western Pennsylvania relate more to the frontier than to the eastern parts of those states, I would like to know if readers would prefer that these events be covered in the volumes for their respective state/region or should they be covered in a separate volume on the frontier?

Desmarais’ text is stuffed with information. He provides URLs to the web sites of tourism authorities, museums, parks, and other sites, plus general directions on how to get to historical locations. Best of all, he treats his readers to detailed accounts of the events that played out at those places. Desmarais describes the war’s big battles and major sieges, but also an incredible number of minor skirmishes forgotten by all but dedicated local historians. Perhaps the most important thing that this guidebook teaches is the surprisingly vast scope of the struggle that defied British power and created the United States of America. This work reminds modern Americans of an important lesson – the difficulty of quelling popularly backed insurgencies. The nation’s armed forces later learned that lesson the hard way in Vietnam and then promptly forgot it until getting mired in dual wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those repeated trials make the combined insurrection and civil war that Desmarais chronicles in such rich detail all the more relevant. This is a book that belongs in the personal library of every serious student of the War of Independence. It will enrich any trip to the areas Desmarais covers and lead its owners to sites and insights that remain hidden from the casual historical tourist.

You really did a service with your book overall - not just to those interested in an easy synopsis dispelling the notion that nothing at all happened in NH during the war. You've captured things in NE and Canada that almost everyone overlooks. I am betting that it will become a fast classic in our little historical sphere. Nice work, Norm.
